A claim arrives dressed as data. A percentage, a benchmark, “caught up to.” We nod, because numbers feel objective even when no one checked them.
Meta’s AI chief told a room of employees that an unfinished model has matched a rival’s best. No benchmark named. No paper published. Anonymous sources and a town hall.
We do this in our own companies constantly. We call it a strong quarter before the books close. We call the team aligned because no one objected in the meeting.
Self-graded work is not proof. It’s optimism with a spreadsheet.
The organizations that win long term build a habit most avoid: they let someone outside the building grade the test. A customer. An auditor. A number they didn’t design themselves.
