We hear it more than we notice it. Someone says we’re ready. That we have potential. That they believe in us.
We say thank you. We move on.
That’s the mistake.
A compliment closes a loop. An invitation opens one, and we keep confusing the two.
When a mentor tells us we could handle more, we hear flattery. What we should hear is a door held open, on someone else’s patience, not ours.
We wait for permission that already arrived. We wait for a second invitation that isn’t coming, because the door doesn’t stay open on its own schedule.
The founders who scale, the leaders who get promoted twice in one meeting, the people who suddenly seem to have caught a wave, they didn’t get luckier votes of confidence than anyone else.
They just heard the invitation the first time it was spoken.
We are handed belief more often than we admit. We just keep receiving it as a compliment instead of a summons.
What would we do differently this week if we treated the last compliment we received as an instruction instead of a nicety?
