I sat watching a match the other night that I didn’t expect to stay up for.
The South African team, ranked well below their South Korean opponents, walked onto the pitch against all reasonable expectation. The commentators were already narrating the inevitable. The analytics had long since settled the debate.
I watched something else happen entirely.
By the 75th minute, the underdog had not just competed. They had qualified for the World Cup knockout phase for the first time in their nation’s history.
I’ve seen this before in business. I’ve coached founders who almost didn’t take the meeting because the client was too big. Leaders who almost didn’t make the hire because they weren’t sure they could afford it. Teams that almost didn’t launch because the market was too crowded.
The ones who didn’t show up never found out what was possible.
What history tells us, repeatedly, is that the adults in the room are sometimes the last ones to see it coming. The favorite doesn’t always finish. The odds are a starting point, not a verdict.
The only thing certain is that if you’re not in the game, you can’t change the result.
