Yesterday I slipped.
I was distracted during a call with a client who needed me to be present. My mind wandered to the next meeting, the proposal due, the dinner plans. I was there, but I wasn’t there.
Here’s what I realized: Leadership isn’t measured by checklist compliance. It’s not about following the prescribed steps or maintaining the veneer of engagement.
The real question each evening is more straightforward and far more uncomfortable: Did I show up for the people who depend on me?
Not halfway. Not physically present while mentally absent. Fully.
Your team doesn’t need you to be perfect. They need you to be present. Your clients aren’t asking for flawless execution. They’re asking for your full attention, your best thinking, your genuine care about their success.
When you’re building something meaningful, when you’re scaling an organization that matters, people are watching. Not to catch you following the rules, but to see if you’re actually with them.
Some days you’ll slip. I did yesterday. That’s data, not failure.
But every day, you’re asked the same question: Did I show up fully for the people who depend on me?
That’s the work. That’s the standard.
Everything else is just administration.
